World Progress Report Focuses on Helping People Lead Healthier Lives
BOCA RATON, FL, April 17, 2010 /Nutrition PR News/ -- The numbers continue to rise. Over two thirds of the United States adult population is already affected. Even our nation's youth are not exempt from the escalating statistics. Often ignored until conditions worsen, obesity in America is becoming a growing trend.
According to the Weight-control Information Network: "Overweight and obesity result from energy imbalance. The body needs a certain amount of energy (calories) from food to sustain basic life functions. Body weight is maintained when calories eaten equals the number of calories the body expends, or "burns." When more calories are consumed than burned, energy balance is tipped toward weight gain, overweight, and obesity. Genetic, environmental, behavioral, and socioeconomic factors can all lead to overweight and obesity."
More specifically, weight gain can stem from inactivity. Reports show that nearly 40 percent of today's adults lead sedentary lives; it seems our children are following suit as studies show that most youth's physical activity decline rapidly as they age. However, there is good news. Obesity can be prevented.
Treatment methods can be as simple as changes in your diet and an increase to your daily physical activity. Other, more extreme measures include prescription weight-loss medications as well as some form of weight loss surgery. Regardless of the chosen approach, treatment involves hard work and dedication.
Oftentimes, most people lack the drive to follow through on their commitments. As such, World Progress Report with Joan Lunden on their Public Television series will highlight the companies and medical professionals helping others achieve not just their ideal weight, but also a healthier lifestyle.
"People inspiring other people can result in change. By focusing on the struggles people had to overcome, we hope to show others that it is possible to gain control of your life," said the Executive Producer of the program.
